Who Is Molchanovs Wave 2 For?

Molchanovs Wave 2 is the second step in open water freediving certification — here's how to know if it's the right level for you.

🤿

Already Hold Your Wave 1?

This is the natural next step — build on your Wave 1 open water skills and progress to 24-30m constant weight/free immersion, 50m dynamic apnea, and your first constant weight no-fins dives to 15m.

Certified Elsewhere at This Level?

Hold an equivalent certification — SSI Level 2, AIDA 3 or PADI Advanced Freediver? A crossover evaluation lets you skip straight to Wave 2 without repeating Wave 1. Confirm your level before booking.

🌊

Ready to Push Past 30m?

Already comfortable at Wave 2 depths and want to go further? Most Wave 2 graduates move on to Wave 3 for 34-40m depth and 75m dynamic apnea — check requirements before booking.

Not Yet Wave 1 Certified?

Wave 2 requires a Wave 1 certification (or equivalent) as a prerequisite. If you're just starting out, begin with our beginner open water course first.

📚 PROGRAM IN DEPTH

Molchanovs Wave 2 Course — Program in Depth

Every Molchanovs Wave 2 course is led by our in-house Molchanovs-certified freediving instructors, at a maximum ratio of 3 students per instructor, so you get hands-on, personal attention in the pool and on the boat.

Molchanovs Wave 2 builds directly on your Wave 1 certification, refining technique and pushing your depth range from 12-20m to 24-30m. Over 3 days you'll sharpen equalization, breath-hold and constant weight/free immersion technique in the pool at Chalong, then apply it across two separate open water days at Racha Yai Island.

Day 1
9:00 AM – 1:00 PM · Chalong Pool

Static and dynamic apnea training — building toward 2 minutes 30 seconds static and 50 meters dynamic with bi-fins, plus dynamic no-fins technique work toward 35 meters and refined equalization under exertion.

Day 2
7:30 AM – 4:00 PM · Full Day Trip to Racha Yai Island

Hotel pickup around 7:30am, boat departs Chalong Pier. Open water training day — constant weight with bi-fins and free immersion technique along the line, building depth toward the 24-30m certification range, plus CWTB buddying practice at 10-15m.

Day 3
9:00 AM – 1:00 PM · Local Dive Site (sea condition dependent)

Meeting at Rawai Pier. Open water deep training day — certification depth attempts in CWTB and FIM to 24-30m, constant weight no-fins (CNF) to 15m, and rescue-from-15m skills assessment.

  • Static apnea: hold your breath face-down in the pool for at least 2 minutes 30 seconds
  • Dynamic apnea (DYNB): swim 50 meters underwater with bi-fins on a single breath
  • Dynamic no-fins (DNF): swim 35 meters underwater without fins
  • Constant weight with bi-fins (CWTB) & free immersion (FIM): descend and ascend along a weighted line to 24-30 meters depth
  • Constant weight no-fins (CNF): descend and ascend without fins to 15 meters
  • Buddy safety: CWTB buddying support at 10-15m and rescue from 15m
  • Advanced technique: freefall incorporation and improved depth diving technique

All Molchanovs Wave 2 equipment is included in your course price — nothing extra to rent or buy.

  • Low-volume freediving mask
  • Long bi-fins
  • Snorkel
  • Wetsuit (tropical-weight, for pool and boat days)
  • Weight belt, sized to you
  • Lanyard for depth line safety
  • Molchanovs Wave 2 digital course access
  • Minimum age: 18 years old, or 16–17 with written consent from a parent or legal guardian (Molchanovs requirement)
  • Prerequisite: Molchanovs Wave 1 certification, or an equivalent level from another agency (SSI Level 1, AIDA 2, PADI Freediver) via crossover evaluation — confirm eligibility before booking
  • Swim requirement: able to swim 200m unassisted, non-stop, in a pool
  • Avoid scuba diving in the 24 hours before your course (residual nitrogen risk)
  • Eat a light meal 2–3 hours before pool or boat sessions — don't dive on a full or empty stomach
  • Bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle
  • Hotel pickup is included for the Racha Yai boat day (Kata, Karon, Chalong, Rawai, Kamala areas)
🏝️ WHERE YOU'LL DIVE

Your Open Water Days: Racha Yai Island

About an hour by boat from Chalong Pier, Racha Yai's calm, clear bays are where you'll build depth across your Molchanovs Wave 2 open water days — sheltered conditions with a fixed dive line, ideal for pushing past 20m without fighting current. Day 3's deeper session may move to a nearby local dive site if sea conditions call for it.

CALM & CLEAR Sheltered Bays, Reliable Visibility

Racha Yai's bays are naturally sheltered from currents and swell, with visibility regularly reaching 15–20 metres — ideal conditions for constant weight and free immersion training toward your 24-30m range.

BUOY & LINE DIVING Guided Descent to 24-30 Metres

Wave 2 builds on your Wave 1 line diving experience — your instructor sets the line, spots every dive, and helps you push from your Wave 1 depth toward the Wave 2 certification range of 24-30 metres across two open water days.

MARINE LIFE Colorful Reefs & Friendly Fish

Expect vibrant hard and soft corals, clownfish, and parrotfish at Racha Yai — and with a bit of luck, a turtle gliding past while you're on the line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Wave 1 before taking Wave 2?
Yes — Wave 2 requires a Molchanovs Wave 1 certification, or an equivalent level from another agency (SSI Level 1, AIDA 2, PADI Freediver) confirmed via a crossover evaluation. Unlike the entry into Wave 1, there's no water-confidence bypass for Wave 2 — it builds directly on skills and depth exposure from your Wave 1 training. Contact us before booking to confirm your certification qualifies.
What's the difference between Wave 1 and Wave 2?
Wave 1 gets you certified to 12-20m with 1:30 static and 30m dynamic apnea. Wave 2 pushes that to 24-30m constant weight/free immersion, 2:30 static, 50m dynamic with bi-fins, 35m dynamic no-fins, and introduces your first constant weight no-fins dives to 15m — plus buddy safety and rescue skills at 10-15m depth.
What is the best time of year for freediving in Phuket?
The Andaman Sea is diveable year-round. The calmest conditions are typically November to April, with excellent visibility and flat seas.
How many students per instructor?
We keep groups small — maximum 3 students per instructor for safety and quality of coaching.
What depth will I reach during the course?
Molchanovs Wave 2 certification requires a static breath-hold of 2 minutes 30 seconds, a 50m dynamic swim with bi-fins, a 35m dynamic no-fins swim, and a constant weight with bi-fins/free immersion dive to 24-30 metres along a guided buoy line at Racha Yai, plus a constant weight no-fins dive to 15m. Your instructor paces your progression across your pool day and two open water days.
How is the 3-day course structured?
Day 1 is pool training at Chalong — static and dynamic apnea work. Day 2 is a full-day boat trip to Racha Yai for open water depth training. Day 3 returns to open water for certification depth attempts and your rescue/buddying skills assessment. See the full breakdown in Program in Depth above.
Can I do the course if I struggle to equalise at depth?
Yes — refining equalisation under increasing pressure is a core focus of Wave 2. You'll already have the Frenzel basics from Wave 1, and we build on that technique specifically for the 24-30m range. Most students progress steadily across the two open water days rather than reaching full depth on day one.
What should I bring to the course?
Just swimwear, a towel, sun protection, and a reusable water bottle. We provide all freediving equipment — mask, bi-fins, wetsuit, weight belt, lanyard — included in your course price. If you have your own mask or fins you're comfortable with, feel free to bring them.
Is freediving safe at Wave 2 depths?
Yes. Wave 2 pushes into deeper depth ranges, so we place extra emphasis on buoy-line procedures, recovery breathing, and rescue skills from 10-15m before you dive. With a maximum of 3 students per instructor, you're closely supervised and spotted on every single descent.
Can I do the course alone, or do I need a buddy?
You don't need to bring a buddy — most of our students book solo. CWTB buddying and rescue protocols at 10-15m are a core part of Wave 2 training, and you'll be paired with another student or your instructor for all open water sessions. Solo travellers are very welcome.
What happens if I don't pass the assessment?
There's no rush and no pressure. If you're not quite ready on the first attempt, we'll work with you on extra pool or open water time to help you get there — most students simply need a little more practice with equalisation or relaxation, and we adjust the pace to suit you.
Do you offer private courses?
Yes — if you'd prefer one-on-one instruction or want to book the course privately for your group, just message us and we'll arrange it. Private courses follow the same Molchanovs Wave 2 curriculum and certification, with full flexibility on scheduling.
What's the water temperature like in Phuket?
The Andaman Sea stays warm year-round, typically between 28–30°C (82–86°F). A 3mm wetsuit (which we provide) is plenty for comfort during longer sessions, but many students freedive comfortably without one in the warmer months.
