Who Is Molchanovs Wave 3 For?

Molchanovs Wave 3 is our master-level open water certification — here's how to know if it's the right level for you.

🤿

Already Hold Your Wave 2?

This is the natural next step — build on your Wave 2 skills and progress to 34-40m constant weight/free immersion, 75m dynamic apnea, and your first constant no-fins dives to 25-30m.

🔄

Certified Elsewhere at This Level?

Hold an equivalent certification — SSI Level 2, AIDA 3, PADI Advanced Freediver? A crossover evaluation lets you skip straight to Wave 3 without repeating Wave 2. You'll also need a current CPR/First Aid certificate (less than 2 years old) before booking.

🌊

Ready to Push Past 40m?

Already comfortable at Wave 3 depths and want to go further? Most Wave 3 graduates move on to Wave 4 for competitive-level training — 100m dynamic apnea and 40m+ constant weight — check requirements before booking.

🥉

Not Yet Wave 2 Certified?

Wave 3 requires a Wave 2 certification (or equivalent) as a prerequisite. If you haven't reached that level yet, start with our intermediate open water course first.

📚 PROGRAM IN DEPTH

Molchanovs Wave 3 Course — Program in Depth

Every Molchanovs Wave 3 course is led by our in-house Molchanovs-certified freediving instructors, at a maximum ratio of 3 students per instructor, so you get hands-on, personal attention in the pool and on the boat.

Molchanovs Wave 3 builds directly on your Wave 2 certification, pushing your depth range from 24-30m to 34-40m while adding advanced equalization and safety skills. Over 5 days you'll cover deep-diving theory and technique in the pool at Chalong, apply it at moderate depth on a local reef day, then certify across two full open water days at Racha Yai Island.

Day 1
9:00 AM – 1:00 PM · Chalong Pool

Theory covering freediving physiology, lung measurements, breathing, and failure depth; attention deconcentration technique; static apnea building toward 3 minutes 30 seconds; dynamic apnea (DYNB) technique work toward 75 meters with bi-fins; dynamic no-fins (DNF) work toward 50 meters.

Day 2
9:00 AM – 1:00 PM · Chalong Pool

Advanced equalization training — Frenzel combined with mouthfill and reverse packing, both dry and in the pool; Functional Residual Capacity (FRC) diving theory and shallow pool practice; advanced rescue refresher covering blackout rescue simulation and self-rescue skills.

Day 3
8:30 AM – 1:00 PM · Kata Reef

First open-water application of FRC diving and mouthfill equalization at moderate depth; CWTB and free immersion technique refinement along the line; first constant no-fins (CNF) attempts; depth-specific rescue drills — blackout rescue and 20m surface tow — before heading out to Racha Yai for your certification days.

Day 4
7:30 AM – 4:00 PM · Full Day Trip to Racha Yai Island (Boat Day 1)

Hotel pickup around 7:30am, breakfast served on the way to Racha Yai. First dive — constant weight descent applying mouthfill equalization, building progressive depth, plus CWTB buddying practice from 20m. Lunch on board, then second dive continuing depth progression and FRC technique refinement.

Day 5
7:30 AM – 4:00 PM · Full Day Trip to Racha Yai Island (Boat Day 2)

First dive — final depth build toward 40m. Lunch on board, then second dive — certification depth attempt in CWTB and FIM to at least 34 meters, constant no-fins (CNF) to 25-30m, plus 20m rescue and surface tow skill assessment.

  • Static apnea: hold your breath face-down in the pool for at least 3 minutes 30 seconds
  • Dynamic apnea (DYNB): swim 75 meters underwater with bi-fins on a single breath
  • Dynamic no-fins (DNF): swim 50 meters underwater without fins
  • Constant weight with bi-fins (CWTB) & free immersion (FIM): descend and ascend along a weighted line to 34-40 meters depth
  • Constant no-fins (CNF): descend and ascend without fins to 25-30 meters
  • Buddy safety: CWTB buddying support from 20m, rescue from 20m plus 20m surface tow
  • Advanced technique: Frenzel combined with mouthfill and reverse packing equalization, plus Functional Residual Capacity (FRC) dives

All Molchanovs Wave 3 equipment is included in your course price — nothing extra to rent or buy.

🏝️ WHERE YOU'LL DIVE

Your Open Water Days: Racha Yai Island

About an hour by boat from Chalong Pier, Racha Yai's calm, clear bays are where you'll build toward your certification depth across your two Molchanovs Wave 3 boat days — sheltered conditions with a fixed dive line, ideal for pushing past 30m without fighting current. Day 3's moderate-depth session takes place at Kata Reef before you head out to Racha Yai for the deeper certification dives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Wave 2 before taking Wave 3?
Yes — Wave 3 requires a Molchanovs Wave 2 certification, or an equivalent level from another agency (SSI Level 2, AIDA 3, PADI Advanced Freediver) confirmed via a crossover evaluation. You'll also need a current CPR/First Aid certificate (issued within the last 2 years), which is a Molchanovs requirement at this level. Contact us before booking to confirm your certification and first-aid cert qualify.
What's the difference between Wave 2 and Wave 3?
Wave 2 gets you certified to 24-30m constant weight/free immersion with 2:30 static, 50m dynamic, 35m dynamic no-fins, and a first constant weight no-fins dive to 15m. Wave 3 pushes that to 34-40m constant weight/free immersion, 3:30 static, 75m dynamic, 50m dynamic no-fins, and 25-30m constant weight no-fins — plus it introduces mouthfill equalisation, reverse packing, FRC (functional residual capacity) diving, and buddy/rescue/tow skills from 20m depth.
What is the best time of year for freediving in Phuket?
The Andaman Sea is diveable year-round. The calmest conditions are typically November to April, with excellent visibility and flat seas.
How many students per instructor?
We keep groups small — maximum 3 students per instructor for safety and quality of coaching.
What depth will I reach during the course?
Molchanovs Wave 3 certification requires a static breath-hold of 3 minutes 30 seconds, a 75m dynamic swim with bi-fins, a 50m dynamic no-fins swim, a constant weight with bi-fins/free immersion dive to 34-40 metres along a guided buoy line at Racha Yai, and a constant weight no-fins dive to 25-30m. Your instructor paces your progression across two pool days, one Kata Reef day, and two open water boat days.
How is the 5-day course structured?
Days 1-2 are pool training at Chalong — static/dynamic apnea work plus advanced equalisation (mouthfill) and FRC theory. Day 3 moves to open water at Kata Reef to apply mouthfill and FRC diving, take your first constant weight no-fins dives, and run rescue drills. Days 4-5 are full-day boat trips to Racha Yai for depth-build dives and your certification dives to 34-40m. See the full breakdown in Program in Depth above.
Can I do the course if I struggle to equalise at depth?
Yes — Wave 3 is built around solving exactly this. Frenzel equalisation reaches a natural limit as lung volume compresses at depth, so Wave 3 teaches mouthfill equalisation and reverse packing, techniques that let you keep equalising well past where Frenzel alone runs out. Most students spend real pool time drilling mouthfill before applying it in open water.
What should I bring to the course?
Just swimwear, a towel, sun protection, and a reusable water bottle. We provide all freediving equipment — mask, bi-fins, wetsuit, weight belt, lanyard — included in your course price. If you have your own mask or fins you're comfortable with, feel free to bring them.
Is freediving safe at Wave 3 depths?
Yes. Wave 3 works at meaningfully greater depth and introduces mouthfill and FRC diving, so we place extra emphasis on buoy-line procedures, recovery breathing, and buddy/rescue/tow skills from 20m before you dive. With a maximum of 3 students per instructor, you're closely supervised and spotted on every single descent.
Can I do the course alone, or do I need a buddy?
You don't need to bring a buddy — most of our students book solo. CWTB buddying, rescue, and tow protocols from 20m are a core part of Wave 3 training, and you'll be paired with another student or your instructor for all open water sessions. Solo travellers are very welcome.
What happens if I don't pass the assessment?
There's no rush and no pressure. If you're not quite ready on the first attempt, we'll work with you on extra pool or open water time to help you get there — most students simply need a little more practice with mouthfill equalisation or relaxation at depth, and we adjust the pace to suit you.
Do you offer private courses?
Yes — if you'd prefer one-on-one instruction or want to book the course privately for your group, just message us and we'll arrange it. Private courses follow the same Molchanovs Wave 3 curriculum and certification, with full flexibility on scheduling.
What's the water temperature like in Phuket?
The Andaman Sea stays warm year-round, typically between 28–30°C (82–86°F). A 3mm wetsuit (which we provide) is plenty for comfort during longer sessions, but many students freedive comfortably without one in the warmer months.
