📚 PROGRAM IN DEPTH

PADI Basic Freediver Course — Program in Depth

Every PADI Basic Freediver course is led by our in-house PADI-certified freediving instructors, at a maximum ratio of 3 students per instructor, so you get hands-on, personal attention in the pool and on the boat.

PADI Basic Freediver is your first official PADI freediving certification — a structured 2-day introduction to breath-hold diving. The course is split into a theory section via PADI Freediver Touch (covering what happens in your body under pressure and how to improve your apnea skills) and a practical section: static and dynamic apnea technique in confined water, applied in open water on a day trip to Racha Yai island, with rescue technique also covered. No prior experience or scuba certification is required — just adequate swimming skills.

Day 1
9:00 AM – 1:00 PM · Chalong Pool

Theory session via PADI Freediver Touch, followed by confined-water practice: static apnea and dynamic apnea with fins, plus rescue technique, coached one-on-one by your instructor.

🏝️ WHERE YOU'LL DIVE

Your Open Water Day: Racha Yai Island

About an hour by boat from Chalong Pier, Racha Yai's calm, clear bays are exactly why we use it for your PADI Basic Freediver open water session — sheltered conditions that let you focus on breathing and technique, not fighting current.

Racha Yai island bay near Phuket, calm sheltered water
CALM & CLEAR Sheltered, Beginner-Friendly Bays

Racha Yai's bays are naturally sheltered from currents and swell, with visibility regularly reaching 15–20 metres — ideal conditions for your first breath-hold dives in open water.

SHALLOW & CONTROLLED Kept Comfortably Shallow

PADI Basic Freediver has no fixed minimum depth requirement — your instructor keeps both dives shallow and fully guided, deep enough to feel like a real open water dive, shallow enough to stay relaxed.

Coral reef and marine life at Racha Yai, Phuket
MARINE LIFE Colorful Reefs & Friendly Fish

Expect vibrant hard and soft corals, clownfish, and parrotfish — and with a bit of luck, a turtle gliding past while you're on your breath-hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need PADI Basic Freediver before PADI Freediver?
PADI Basic Freediver is designed as the entry point to the PADI freediving system, and PADI describes it as the first step toward the full PADI Freediver course. If you're an experienced swimmer, spearfisherman, or breath-hold diver, contact us to discuss whether you might be assessed directly for PADI Freediver instead.
What is the best time of year for freediving in Phuket?
The Andaman Sea is diveable year-round. The calmest conditions are typically November to April, with excellent visibility and flat seas.
How many students per instructor?
We keep groups small — maximum 3 students per instructor for safety and quality of coaching.
What depth will I reach during the course?
PADI Basic Freediver doesn't set a fixed minimum depth or time requirement — it's a skills-based certification focused on technique, breathing, and comfort in the water rather than hitting a specific number. Open water dives at Racha Yai are relaxed and fully instructor-guided.
Is this course right for me?
The 2-day PADI Basic Freediver programme is available to anyone aged 12+ with adequate swimming skills. It suits confident swimmers and spearfishermen with prior breath-hold experience, as well as complete beginners who want the full open water experience. Not sure? Contact us and we'll advise honestly.
Can I do the course if I struggle to equalise?
Yes — equalisation is something almost everyone struggles with at first, and it's one of the main skills we work on during PADI Basic Freediver. Our instructors teach the Frenzel technique step by step in the pool before you ever dive deep. Most students go from "I can't equalise at all" to comfortably diving in open water on Day 2.
What should I bring to the course?
Just swimwear, a towel, sun protection, and a reusable water bottle. We provide all freediving equipment — mask, fins, wetsuit, weight belt — included in your course price. If you have your own mask or fins you're comfortable with, feel free to bring them.
Is freediving dangerous for beginners?
Freediving is very safe when taught properly. PADI Basic Freediver is designed specifically for beginners, with a strong focus on safety protocols, buddy diving, and recognising your own limits. With a maximum of 3 students per instructor, you're closely supervised at every stage — in the pool and in open water.
Can I do the course alone, or do I need a buddy?
You don't need to bring a buddy — most of our students book solo. Buddy diving and rescue technique are core parts of PADI Basic Freediver safety training, and you'll be paired with another student or your instructor for all open water sessions. Solo travellers are very welcome.
What happens if I don't pass the assessment?
There's no rush and no pressure. If you're not quite ready on the first attempt, we'll work with you on extra pool or open water time to help you get there — most students simply need a little more practice with equalisation or relaxation, and we adjust the pace to suit you.
Do you offer private courses?
Yes — if you'd prefer one-on-one instruction or want to book the course privately for your group, just message us and we'll arrange it. Private courses follow the same PADI Basic Freediver curriculum and certification, with full flexibility on scheduling.
What's the water temperature like in Phuket?
The Andaman Sea stays warm year-round, typically between 28–30°C (82–86°F). A 3mm wetsuit (which we provide) is plenty for comfort during longer sessions, but many students freedive comfortably without one in the warmer months.
