Who Is SSI Freediving Level 2 For?

SSI Freediving Level 2 is the second step in open water freediving certification — here's how to know if it's the right level for you.

🤿

Already Hold Your SSI Level 1?

This is the natural next step — build on your Level 1 open water skills and progress to 24-30m constant weight/free immersion, and your first constant weight no-fins dives to 15m.

🔄

Certified Elsewhere at This Level?

Hold an equivalent certification — Molchanovs Wave 2, AIDA 3 or PADI Advanced Freediver? A crossover evaluation lets you skip straight to Level 2 without repeating Level 1. Confirm your level before booking.

Ready to Push Past 30m?

Already comfortable at Level 2 depths and want to go further? Most Level 2 graduates move on to SSI Level 3 for 32-40m depth — check requirements before booking.

Not Yet Level 1 Certified?

Level 2 requires an SSI Freediving Level 1 certification (or equivalent) as a prerequisite. If you're just starting out, begin with our beginner open water course first.

🏝️ WHERE YOU'LL DIVE

Your Open Water Days: Racha Yai Island

About an hour by boat from Chalong Pier, Racha Yai's calm, clear bays are exactly why we use it for your SSI Freediving Level 2 open water sessions — sheltered conditions with a fixed dive line, ideal for building real depth without fighting current, across your two certification boat days.

CALM & CLEAR Sheltered Bays, Reliable Visibility

Racha Yai's bays are naturally sheltered from currents and swell, with visibility regularly reaching 15–20 metres — ideal conditions for building certified depth without fighting the elements.

DEPTH TRAINING Certification Depth to 24-30 Metres

SSI Level 2 pushes your line diving further — your instructor spots every dive as you build constant weight/free immersion technique toward the 24-30 metre certification range, plus your first constant weight no-fins (CNF) attempts to 15 metres.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need SSI Freediving Level 1 before taking Level 2?
Yes — SSI Freediving Level 1 (or an equivalent certification from another agency) is a mandatory prerequisite for Level 2. If you don't hold it yet, start with our beginner open water course first.
Can I use a certification from another agency instead of SSI Level 1?
Yes — if you hold an equivalent certification such as Molchanovs Wave 1, AIDA 2, or PADI Freediver, a quick crossover evaluation lets you join SSI Level 2 directly without repeating Level 1. Message us to confirm your eligibility before booking.
What's the difference between SSI Level 1 and SSI Level 2?
SSI Level 1 is your first open-water depth certification, reaching 12-20 metres. SSI Level 2 builds directly on that — 3 days combining pool training with two open-water days at Racha Yai Island, pushing your certification depth to 24-30 metres and introducing constant weight no-fins (CNF) diving to 15 metres.
What is the best time of year for freediving in Phuket?
Phuket's diving season runs November to April, with the calmest seas and best visibility around Racha Yai Island. The monsoon season (May–October) can bring rougher conditions on the west coast, though Racha Yai's sheltered bays often stay diveable — if conditions aren't safe on your scheduled day, we'll reschedule at no extra cost.
How many students per instructor?
Every SSI Level 2 course is capped at a maximum of 3 students per instructor, so you get hands-on, personal attention in the pool and on the boat.
What depth will I reach during the course?
SSI Level 2 targets a certification depth range of 24-30 metres using constant weight and free immersion technique, plus your first constant weight no-fins (CNF) dives to 15 metres.
What if I've never tried no-fins (CNF) diving before?
That's expected — SSI Level 2 is where most divers try constant weight no-fins for the first time. Technique is introduced in the pool on Day 1 before you attempt it in open water, and your instructor builds you up gradually to the 15-metre target.
Can I do the course if I struggle to equalise under exertion?
Yes — Level 2 refines your equalization technique specifically for deeper, more physically demanding dives, starting in the pool where there's no depth pressure to manage. You'll build the skill progressively before applying it at 24-30m on your Racha Yai boat days.
What should I bring to the course?
Just swimwear, a towel, sun protection, and a reusable water bottle. We provide all freediving equipment — mask, long bi-fins, snorkel, wetsuit, weight belt, and lanyard — included in your course price.
Is freediving safe at SSI Level 2 depths?
Yes. All open-water dives are conducted along a weighted line with a qualified SSI Instructor spotting every dive and buddy pair, and Level 2 includes a dedicated rescue-from-15m skills assessment as part of the curriculum.
Can I do the course alone, or do I need a buddy?
You don't need to bring a buddy — most students book solo. Buddy safety protocols, including buddying practice at 10-15m, are taught as part of the Level 2 curriculum, and you'll be paired with another student or your instructor throughout the course.
What happens if I don't pass the assessment?
There's no rush and no pressure. If you need more practice with equalisation, breath-hold, or no-fins technique, we'll work with you on extra pool time before heading back out to Racha Yai — most students just need a little more practice.
Do you offer private courses?
Yes — if you'd prefer one-on-one instruction or want to book privately for your group, just message us and we'll arrange it. Private courses follow the same SSI Level 2 curriculum and certification, with full flexibility on scheduling.
What's the water temperature like in Phuket?
Water temperature around Phuket and Racha Yai stays warm year-round, typically 28-30°C, so a light wetsuit is comfortable for most divers (included in your course price).
