🤿 Is This For Me?

Who Is This Course For?

The Open Water Diver course is Phuket's most popular certification for a reason — here's who it's built for.

🌱

Complete Beginners

Never dived before? No problem. This is an entry-level certification built from the ground up — pool basics first, open water second, at your own pace.

🏖️

Holiday Travelers

Want more than a one-off Discovery dive? In 2–3 days you leave Phuket with a lifetime certification, not just a memory.

👨‍👩‍👧

Families & Kids (10+)

Minimum age is 10, and small-group instruction means your instructor can pace the course around younger or nervous divers in the family.

🤿

Already Tried a Discovery Dive

If you've done a Discover Scuba Diving session with us or another agency, some completed skills may count toward your certification.

💑

Couples & Friends

Certify together and dive as buddies for life — the course is designed around the buddy system from day one.

🎓

Future Divemasters

Open Water is Level 1 of SSS Phuket's full progression — Advanced, Rescue, Divemaster, and Instructor all build from here.

🏝️ Your Dive Sites

Phuket Open Water | Dive Sites in Depth

Kata Reef dive site Phuket
🏖️ Kata Beach / Kata Reef

Right off our dive center at Kata Beach, Kata Reef is where every Open Water student does their first open water dive — and where the entire Budget package takes place. It's a shallow, sheltered reef, ideal for skill practice and building confidence before heading to deeper sites. Calm conditions and easy, short access from the dive center mean less time in transit and more time actually diving. Expect healthy coral cover and common reef fish like parrotfish, clownfish, and angelfish — and because it's minutes from the shop, instructors can adapt quickly if conditions change on any given day.

Racha Yai dive site Phuket
🏝️ Racha Yai

Koh Racha Yai is the larger of the two Racha islands, about 30 minutes by speedboat off Phuket's southeastern coast — used for Standard's boat day and one of Premium's two boat days.

Staghorn coral predominates in many areas, and you'll find common tropical fish right from the start of your dive — barracuda, tuna, and milk fish are usual sights. Dives typically take place at sites like Racha Yai Bay 1 (Bungalow Bay), Lucy's Reef, and Reef "Do Little Do" — with the wreck at Marla's Mystery, now home to morays, groupers, and lionfish, occasionally worked in for variety.

Bigger sightings happen too — turtles, leopard (zebra) sharks, and manta rays, though as non-resident species they're not guaranteed. Dolphins often swim by the boat. Racha Yai's clear water and reliable visibility across seasons make it one of the best places to learn to dive.

Racha Noi dive site Phuket
🏝️ Racha Noi

The quieter, less-visited of the two Racha islands, reached on Racha Noi boat days alongside Racha Yai as part of the Premium package. Dives here typically take place at Banana Bay (Marina Rock) and Racha Noi Bay (South Tip) — sites with slightly more current and rockier terrain than Racha Yai, which usually means better visibility and a higher chance of something bigger passing through open water. A good complement to Racha Yai on the same boat day — different scenery, different pace, no added travel time.

Koh Phi Phi dive site Phuket
🏝️ Koh Phi Phi (Alternative Option)

For students who've already dived the Racha islands multiple times, or on days when your Premium Day 3 shifts due to weather, Phi Phi offers a genuinely different landscape — dramatic limestone cliffs above the water, and a livelier mix of marine life below it, including black tip reef sharks, bamboo sharks, turtles, and occasionally manta rays or whale sharks.

That said, we generally recommend the Racha islands for your actual Open Water training: visibility at Phi Phi can be shorter and some sites carry stronger currents, which makes Racha Yai and Racha Noi the better environment for learning and completing certification dives comfortably. Phi Phi is best treated as a bonus option once you're confident in the water, not your first stop as a brand-new diver.

📚 Program in Depth

Open Water Phuket | Program in Depth

Every course is led by our in-house SSI and PADI-certified instructors — including a Master Scuba Diver Instructor with over 5,000 logged dives — at a maximum ratio of 2 students per instructor, so you get hands-on, personal attention throughout.

🤿 Course Overview

The Phuket Open Water course combines at least 5 pool sessions with a minimum of 4 open water dives at Kata Reef, Racha Yai, or Racha Noi, depending on your package. You'll learn essential scuba skills step by step — first in the pool, then applied in open water — under the direct guidance of our in-house SSI and PADI-certified instructors. By the end, you're not just certified — you're comfortable and confident breathing underwater, ready to explore reefs and marine life on your own.

🎯 Skills You'll Master
  • Mask clearing & regulator recovery — handle water in your mask and regain your air source calmly.
  • Buoyancy control — hover, ascend, and descend without touching the reef.
  • Controlled Emergency Swimming Ascent (CESA) — the core safety skill for a controlled ascent if needed.
  • Buddy system & communication — hand signals, pairing up, and staying together underwater.
  • Basic underwater navigation — using natural features and a compass to find your way.
  • Equipment handling — assembling, adjusting, and managing your gear comfortably underwater.

Already tried a Discover Scuba Diving session with us or another agency? Some completed skills may be credited toward your certification.

📖 How You'll Learn

Once you arrive, you'll get access to SSI's interactive learning materials — digital or physical, your choice — covering core terminology and safety procedures through clear write-ups and video. Each new concept is immediately followed by hands-on pool practice, so theory turns into muscle memory before you ever hit open water.

✅ Before You Arrive

If you'd like to complete the eLearning portion of the course before arriving, just let us know when booking and we'll send you access to the SSI online learning platform in advance.

Every diver must also complete the official SSI Diver Medical Questionnaire before getting in the water. Download it below, fill it out before you arrive, and bring it with you (or email it to us in advance) to save time on Day 1. If you answer "yes" to certain questions, the form's page 3 will need sign-off from a physician before your course can proceed.
